It was an undercover police sting designed to track down a Mr Big and dismantle a car-stealing racket in south-east Queensland.

Police feared the “cut and shut” syndicate was peddling drugs, with tentacles interstate and even overseas through what was termed the “Romanian connection”.

Centred on the Gold Coast and south Brisbane, Operation Trident detectives recruited a “mole” – a man named Anthony Riesenweber – to carry on the trade of high-end stolen cars and parts.
