Second-hand car prices also soared and consumer advocates say there has been a worrying rise in “lemons” – a term for defective vehicles.

“There’s something really problematic going with used cars in this state,” Turner said. “It reflects a really deep problem and far too few people are getting a fair fix.”

Turner said part of the issue was consumer rights around used cars were often confusing or difficult to navigate.
