Sinkhole swallows car near tourist hotspot

A car has been swallowed by a sinkhole that ripped open a street near a popular tourist hotspot.

A sinkhole has opened in a busy Southport street.

Emergency services were called to Short St in Southport, on the Gold Coast, shortly after 4am on Thursday after reports of a burst water main.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the ruptured main had created a sinkhole, with council crews closing traffic to excavate the vehicle.
